Nurses for Safe Renewable Power

Looking for a healthy environment for everyone

Ontario’s shameful energy “plan”

The Long Term Energy Plan was released by the Ontario government this week. The full report is available here. (If your Internet connection is a bit fragile, don’t attempt to load up the whole PDF–it is needlessly cumbersome and weighed down with photos and graphics. Got to the By the Numbers section instead.)

One of the major points of the plan is that the government intends to continue with its pursuit of power generation from wind in Ontario, albeit with a slightly longer time frame.

The government has also told people to plan for the necessary power bill increases to make up for this, which they contend is necessary. The Minister of Energy talked about closing the coal plants and he again referred to this mystical $4.4 billion per year in health care costs due to pollution from the coal plants. This figure is complete fantasy–we will deal with that later. Besides, Ontario’s coal plants have been virtually shut down for more than a year–Ontario had already achieved its goals with the amount of wind power it already has.

The reality is that price increases on utility bills of this magnitude are going to cause hardship for Ontario residents, particularly young people, and those on fixed incomes. Energy analyst Tom Adams was a guest on a recent edition of CBC’s Ontario Today, and caller after caller said that they were having to make choices between food for their families and the electricity bill.

Nurses know that poverty is a social determinant of health.

This government is ignoring the commitment of previous governments to provide affordable power for everyone, and instead has opted for the unsupportable “green” mythology which is forcing Ontario into high-priced power, when existing power sources such as hydro-electric are ready and waiting to serve us. The villainization of nuclear is also not supported by the facts.

Higher electricity bills in Ontario will mean:

  • increased poverty especially for the young and those on fixed incomes
  • job losses
  • general decline in services and in the quality of life in what was once a great province, full of opportunity

The Ministry of Energy’s mission is to  promote “the development of a safe, reliable, secure and environmentally sustainable energy supply.”

This government  and this Premier who has the audacity to call herself a “social justice” leader, should be ashamed.

  1. Wind and other renewables can and should be designed safely. People are creative. The current industrial turbines are not the solution due to the many problems they cause, as you well know. But safe wind power is possible.

Nuclear is also not the solution. What facts are you referring to?

Have you been following what’s still happening in Fukushima at all? Not that mainstream media has been reporting that much about it, but basically, our whole planet is in jeopardy because of it.

Poverty is a serious issue, (not just with the cost of energy) and needs to be addressed with sliding scale subsidies. The poor, aged, disabled and sick who are at home all day should be paying far less than the corporate and industrial users who profit from the use.

We have to do something safe and healthy for energy, and it has to be paid for somehow, but residential energy needed for basic life should NOT be a for profit enterprise and full of ridiculous cost over-runs and threats to humanity like nuclear has been and still is.

The green energy costs are miniscule compared to how oil and nuclear industries are subsidized. THAT $ should be transferred to the development of safe and healthy for all renewables. That would create jobs and we’d have safe, affordable, sustainable energy in no time then.

  2. The green energy fiasco is nothing but a scam. Supporters of wind, are supported by wind. The wind industry does not care about human health at all. Instead they deny, accuse, and lie. We do not need wind turbines to be “green”. The Niagara Falls Hydro Generating Station, has to allow water to spill, because useless wind, is first to the grid. Wind is a huge money grab, with NO proven benefit. We could have shut down coal plants with gas, or nuclear. We do not live in Japan, where tsunamis are a possibility, we are very proficient at producing nuclear power very safely, and the negative effects from turbines, not even just health-wise, are simply intolerable. This scam is unraveling, people are rebelling, and the present government will pay for this scam, with their jobs. Many Liberal politicians are heavily invested in wind, and then they turn around, and make laws to promote and protect the industry. Lawsuits are the only way to bring this pyramid scheme down, and for good. The corruption and collusion, between the wind industry and government, is disgusting. Even a letter from a child’s specialist, stating that the child, because of severe sensory issues, will be permanently harmed by the turbines, is ignored. They pretend they know nothing about it, never got the letter, and then when registered letters prove them to be lying, they just ignore the situation entirely. Needless to say, this kind of behaviour has the lawyers very excited. It makes their job so much easier. Do not pay any attention to the windpushers. They are snake-oil salesmen at best, carpet-baggers, at worst. Purveyors of suffering, and Deniers of the truth!
